On Saturday in Rock Springs the Western Wyoming Community College Mustang Soccer team hosted Region IX North Rival Gillette College Pronghorns.
Western scored the first goal of the match for the second game in a row. Jaden Auger put in a long flip throw from Taya Merrell in the 30th minute to take the lead for WWCC. Unfortunately the WWCC lead would not be for long as Gillette College scored in the 38th minute from a scrum in front of the goal. The halftime score was tied at one goal a piece.
The adjustments the Mustangs made shored up the WWCC defense from the fast wingers of GC and put more pressure on the Pronghorn back line. These adjustments paid off when Kylee Manning scored for the Mustangs in the 56th minute from a Claire Morales assist. Western added a third goal from a Maylee Thompson's head and a Kaitlyn Pryor cross in the 78th minute. Markell Freeman was finally healthy enough to play 90 minutes in goal for the first time in the season. The score at the final whistle was 3 to 1 in favor of the Mustangs. The 2018 record for WWCC is now 1 - 3 - 0 and 1 - 0 - 0 in Region IX North play.
Mustang Valuable Player: Jaden Auger - Not only for the first goal of the match but also for playing both offense and defense throughout the match.
