Mustangs Escape Powell with an OT Win

On Wednesday in Powell WY the Mustangs visited the Northwest College Lady Trappers in a Region IX North matchup.

The Mustangs continued their offensive play from the previous match with 16 shots in the first half.  The Mustangs took advantage of a strong wind at their back and took several long shots.  Sadly none of the WWCC shots found the back of the net and the halftime score was 0 to 0.

The NWC team was the first to break the tie when they found the net on counter attacking goals in the 67nd and 73rd minute to take a 2 to 0 lead with 17 minutes to play.  Western fought back despite the deficit and started to find better quality chances and shots.  The Mustangs got on the board when Madisyn Cantrell beat the NWC keeper from about 20 yards out off of an Emma Barnes assist in the 77th minute.  WWCC kept the offense running even into the wind when they scored a goal to even up the score in the 80th minute when Maylee Thompson scored off of a Madisyn Cantrell goal.  With the score tied the Mustangs continued to apply pressure to the Lady Trapper defense and found a third goal in the 85th minute again from Maylee Thompson after she collected a rebound off of the NWC and took a couple of touches on the ball before the shot.  With only 5 minutes left the Mustangs felt comfortable with a 1 goal lead, however the WWCC defense was again countered and NWC scored a match tying goal in the 88th minute.  So, after 90 minutes the score was tied and headed to overtime.

WWCC won the coin toss for overtime and chose to have the wind at their back.  It did not take long for the advantage to pay off.  In the 94th minute WWCC earned a free kick from 45 yards away.  Jaden Auger took the free kick and directed it towards to back post.  With the wind behind her kick and the chaos the well placed kick created in the box the ball was knocked into the goal by a NWC player.  NJCAA overtime periods are sudden victory so the match ended with the NWC own goal for a 4 to 3 win for WWCC.  Madeline Kendrick is created with the win in goal for WWCC.  The win helps Western's 2017 record go to 5 - 4 - 0 and 2 - 2 - 0 in the Region IX North.

Mustang Valuable Player:  Maylee Thompson - her never say die attitude and her goals on the day.
