Overtime Win for Western

The Region IX rematch between the Lady Generals and the Mustangs took place on Friday in Rock Springs.  The first match was a Region IX win for Western in Sheridan.

The first half was played to a draw, but saw good chances by the Mustangs and dangerous set pieces for the Sheridan Lady Generals.

The second half opened up with a quick goal from Western when Katelin Nielson beat the Sheridan offsides trap from a pass from Maddie Case and easily kicked the ball past the keeper for a 1 - 0 lead.  Just when it looked like the Mustangs would hold onto a 1 goal lead and a shutout the Lady Generals scored on a corner kick header in the 77th minute.  Even though there were opportunities in the final thirteen minutes after 90 minutes of play the score was 1 - 1.

In NJCAA play there are two overtime periods where a winner is declared if a goal is scored.  The first overtime period was scoreless for both teams.  The Mustangs kept on knocking on the door and scored after a corner kick was cleared back towards the corner it was kicked from.  Melia Dayley sent the ball towards the back post and Tobin Niebrugge headed in the match winner.  There were only seconds left on the clock before the match would have been a draw.

Mustang Valuable Player: Tobin Niebrugge - for the match winning goal with under 75 seconds left in double overtime
