Opening Day Win In Final Seconds for WWCC

On Tuesday August 22nd, the first official day for the 2017 season the Mustangs played against the Utah State Eastern soccer team in Price UT.

It was a very good test for the Mustangs as the USU-Eastern team is a great side.  In fact the Eagles of Eastern Utah received votes in the NJCAA Preseason poll one of only 26 teams to do so.

Western was first to get on the board with a Maylee Thompson goal in the 40th minute.  It was assisted by Emma Barnes.  Western weathered the storm from Eastern before half and went into the break with a 1 to 0 lead.

In the 70th minute the Eagles evened the score with a goal.  Neither team was able to break the tie during regulation.  As it is a regular season match the two teams headed to extra time (two :10 minute overtime periods - golden goal).

Western did a great job at the end of the match and during most of the two overtime periods to keep the ball on their attacking half.  The breakthrough that they needed came in the 110th minute when the WWCC keeper Madeline Kendrick punted the ball deep down the middle and Madisyn Cantrell was able to corral the ball and shoot it past the keeper.  The game ending goal came with :09 seconds left on the clock.  The Cantrell goal not only ended and won the match but it gave WWCC their first ever win versus the USU-Eastern team.  The win brings the Mustang's record to 1 - 0 - 0 on the young 2017 season.

Mustang Valuable Player:  Madisyn Cantrell for the match winning goal, so calm and collected with just seconds on the clock.
