Westminster Scrimmage Shows Western Wyo Women a Different Level

Photos from Stacie Simmons
On Friday in Salt Lake City UT the Western Wyoming Women's Soccer team scrimmaged against the Westminster Lady Griffins.  This was the first such encounter between the two sides.  Westminster is a NCAA D2 soccer team.

Westminster controlled most of the scrimmage, outshooting the Mustangs three to one and taking 17 more corner kicks than the Mustangs.  For most of the first half the Western Wyo defense withstood the onslaught with some excellent keeping skills from Markell Freeman.  The Griffins found the back of the net twice in the first half with a headed goal from a corner kick in the 14th minute and a perfectly placed long range kick in the 40th minute.  The score at the halftime of the scrimmage was Westminster 2  - Western 0.

The Mustangs fared nearly the same in the second half.  Allowing three goals from Westminster in the 53rd minute, the 65th minute and the 67th minute.  Markell Freeman recorded 9 saves in the net, Karly Conolly had 2 saves and Graisy Greener had 1 save.  The final score for the scrimmage was Westminster 5 and Western Wyo 0.

Mustang Valuable Player: Markell Freeman for her 9 saves and keeping us in the scrimmage through her excellent 60 minutes of work.
