On Saturday in La Junta CO the Western Mustangs faced off against the Otero Junior College Lady Rattlers. Otero will be the #1 seed out of the Region IX South Sub-region. It was a good test for the Mustangs a week before the Region IX playoffs start.
The match was full of high intensity with neither team looking to back down and wanting to carry momentum into the playoffs. Kenzie Lucas, Yridian Cardenas and Maylee Thompson all had multiple shots in the match. Neither team was able to score in the first half of the match.
The second half was just as physical and fast paced as the first half. Western had a chance to score a late goal off of a penalty kick but it was blocked on a great save by the OJC keeper. At the end of 90 minutes the score remained 0 to 0.
The Mustangs and the Lady Rattlers played two overtime periods to see if a goal would be scored. However, despite some good looks a goal was not scored and the match ended in a draw at 0 goals for each team. The record for 2017 is now 11 - 7 - 1.
Mustang Valuable Player: Kenzie Lucas for her spunk and fight throughout the match.
