On Tuesday at Rock Springs Junior High soccer field the Western Wyoming
Community College Men's and Women's soccer teams participated in a Co-Ed
Intersquad scrimmage to finish out the spring 2017 scrimmage season.This is the second time in the team's history that they have played a Co-Ed intersquad scrimmage (also played in 2015). The teams were split up and consisted of the following players; on the red team – (Women's Soccer) Aly Sweet, Britney Merritt, Jessica Arevalo, Kelsey Moffitt, Kenzie Lucas, Ryann Stassinos, Vanesa Ramirez, Alyssa Coe with Sadie Hokum and Claire Morales being assistant coaches. On the white team – (Women's Soccer) Alyssia Lee, Brooke Foster, Clarissa Barton, Maddie Case, Madisyn Cantrell, Rachel Mivshek, Rylee Blacker with Jordan Gibson being an assistant coach.
Rylee Blacker played as a keeper in the first half for the white team. In the first half the weather was a determining factor in play as the teams faced rain, sleet, snow and cold wind chill temperatures. The scoring was started by the Red team but was evened by the white team. Both teams scored again before the intermission and the halftime score was 2 to 2.
After the halftime the weather improved a little as the snow and rain slowed down and the sun came out but the temperatures were still very cool. Red took their third lead of the scrimmage but just as they had done two previous times the White team evened the score. After 90 minutes of play the scrimmage was a tie at 3 to 3.
The two teams went to penalty kicks alternating a member of the men's team and a member of the women's team shooting. It took 11 rounds to determine a winner and the white team won the penalty shootout by a score of 7 to 6. Ben Kunz blocked the final penalty kick for the red team to seal the win. Successful penalty kick shooter for the women's team were; Alyssia Lee, Jessica Arevalo, Clarissa Barton and Vanesa Ramirez.
This is the last action of the 2017 WWCC Spring team and the last time that Rylee Blacker, Maddie Case and Aly Sweet, as graduating sophomores, will wear a Mustang Soccer jersey. We wish them luck in their future endeavors. The next time the Mustangs will practice is in August of 2017. The full 2017 schedule should be released soon.
