On the last day of the 2016 season, a Saturday in Cheyenne WY the high ranked and talented LCCC Golden Eagles played against the Western Wyoming Mustangs.
The Mustangs played without three starters who were sitting out due to yellow card accumulation; Madisyn Cantrell, Jordan Gibson and Alyssia Lee. Maya Perrin's minutes were also limited due to her yellow cards. The short-handed Mustangs played beautifully making the passing and possession difficult for LCCC. The lone first half breakthrough on the Mustang defense came in the 18th minute. Western played a lot of defense in the first half but kept the score close with a 1 to 0 LCCC lead after 45 minutes.
The play of the backline especially MKenzie Safford, Vanesa Ramirez and Jessica Arevalo frustrated the LCCC attack. When LCCC were able to get past the Mustang backline their chances were saved by Rylee Blacker. Western changed tactics with ten minutes remaining in the match to try to tie the match but were not able to score. At the end of the match the grit of the short-handed Mustangs was shown by only losing to the Golden Eagles by a score of 1 to 0. This is a 6 goal difference then the first match up against the Golden Eagles. LCCC had upset the #1 team in the country the day before they played Western. The end of the regular season record for the Mustangs is 6 - 10 - 2 and 4 - 6 - 2 in Region IX play. The Region IX playoff match-ups will be finalized in the next day or so.
Mustang Valuable Player: Rylee Blacker - kept the match close throughout with 11 saves.
