Western Ties with #12 Otero JC

On Friday in La Junta CO the #12 ranked Lady Rattlers from Otero Junior College got off to a fast start against the WWCC Mustnags.  OJC scored in the 4th and the 21st minute.  The OJC lead would not last for the entire 1st half.  WWCC earned a penalty kick in the 43rd minute and the kick was converted by Madisyn Cantrell.  Just two minutes later right before the half the Mustangs again found the back of the net off of a Madisyn Cantrell chip, the play was a counter attack from the Mustangs and Clarissa Barton did a good job of keeping the play alive before she could pass it to Madisyn Cantrell who then scored with just 2 seconds on the clock.  The halftime score was tied 2 to 2.

In the second half the Mustangs would strike first on the scoreboard in the 48th minute on what would be counted as an own goal.  Kenzie Lucas kicked a low corner kick towards the front post of the Lady Rattlers.  The ball was mishandled by both the defender and the keeper and it gave the Mustangs a 3 to 2 lead.  OJC mounted a furious offensive attack the rest of the half and found the tying goal in the 60th minute.  The score would remain tied at 3 goals a piece for the remainder of the last 30 minutes of regulation.  After 90 minutes the score was 3 to 3.

By NJCAA rules the two teams played two halves of overtime, ten minutes a piece.  The Mustangs with a thin bench did what they could in overtime to maintain the tie.  OJC had the bulk of the attack during overtime but Rylee Blacker as keeper and the Mustang defense kept them off of the board.  After 110 minutes of play the match resulted in a draw.  This was the first time in WWCC history that they earned any points from a NJCAA top 20 ranked team.  Also it was the first time that Western had earned points off of Otero's womens team.  The overall record for the Mustangs is now 2 - 4 - 1 and 1 - 1 - 1 in Region IX play.

Mustang Valuable Player:  Madisyn Cantrell for her brace (2 goals) on the day including one in the final seconds of the first half.
