Match versus Otero Cut Short Due to Darkness

Photos from Stacie Simmons
On Friday in Rock Springs WY the Mustangs squared off against Region IX opponent Otero Junior College.  The Lady Rattlers came into the match up riding a 3 game winning streak.  The start time of the match was delayed due to mechanical troubles on the OJC bus.

Otero had the intensity on the cold afternoon in the first half and it paid of from them when they scored in the 40th minute of play.  That goal would be the only scoring for the first 45 minutes of play as the score at the break would be OJC 1 and WWCC 0.

In the second half the Mustangs dug themselves into a bigger hole when the Lady Rattlers scored their scored goal in the 72nd minute to take a 2 goal lead with only 18 minutes to play.  Cassie Southwick lead the comeback for the Mustangs and scored in the 75th minute of play to cut the OJC lead in half.  Hayden Rupe continued her late in the match heroics when she tied the score at two goals a piece in the 83rd minute of play.  Porter Brown assisted Hayden on the tying goal.  No more goals would be had in regulation and the score would be tied at 2 goals a piece heading into overtime.

This marked the second straight overtime for the Mustangs and the third overtime match in their last 5 matches.  Western Wyo had the bulk on the chances in the overtime periods but neither team would score.  The match was finally called due to darkness in the 104th minute of play, since there are no lights on the RSJH field.  The tie evens the 2019 Mustang record to 8 - 5 - 1 and the Region IX record to 4 - 3 - 1.

Mustang Valuable Player: Cassie Southwick had the first goal for the Mustangs and a never give-up attitude.
