Colorado Mesa Too Much for Mustangs in Scrimmage

Photos from Stacie Simmons
On Thursday in Grand Junction CO the 2019 Mustangs finished out their fall scrimmage portion of the season when they faced off against the Colorado Mesa University Lady Mavericks.  This was the first time these two teams had played each other in women's soccer.  In 2015 the Western Wyo Women's team traveled to Grand Junction to play the CMU Club Socer team.

This was the second NCAA D2 (RMAC member) school the Mustangs had faced within a weeks time.  There was definite growth on the part of the Mustangs from their scrimmage against Westminster but there is still a noticeable gap in size, speed, organization and skill.  The Mustangs played the scrimmage without two of it's players; Markell Freeman (GK) and Alison Boman (Mid) were both out for the scrimmage.

Colorado Mesa scored two goals in the first half finding the net in the 13th and 19th minute of play.  The score at the break was CMU 2 and WWCC 0.

In the second half CMU took a few more shots but their placement was not as accurate only beating the Mustang keeper once in the 54th minute of play.  Graisy Greener played 45 minutes as keeper for the Mustangs while Cassie Southwick and Karly Conolly both added 22.5 minutes in the keeper uniform in the scrimmage.  The final score was CMU 3 and WWCC 0.

Mustang Valuable Player: Porter Brown - She showed leadership and held the backline together under almost constant pressure from CMU.

Scrimmage Facts: Shots - WWCC 2, CMU 20; Assists - WWCC 0, CMU 2; Saves - WWCC 7, CMU 2; Corner Kicks - WWCC 2, CMU 8; Free Kicks - WWCC 8, CMU 7; Cards - WWCC 0, CMU 0

Up Next for the Mustangs: Saturday August 31st First Home Match of 2019 versus Central Wyoming College at Rock Springs High School at 3:30pm
