One of the most decorated freshman in the history of WWCC Women's soccer will return for her sophomore year. Markell Freeman a 2018 Box Elder High graduate from Brigham City UT will again mind the nets for the Mustangs.
Markell earned many awards during her first year for Western Wyoming. Freeman was named the 1st Team All Region IX keeper. She was also named the Region IX 2018 Freshman of the Year. Markell was also named the NJCAA Keeper of the week for the week starting October 22nd, after she earned shutouts in the Region IX semifinal and final. During her freshman year she recorded 107 Saves, allowed 24 Goals, had a 81.6% Save Percentage, started 19 matched, played 39 halves, logged 1565 minutes played and recorded 8 Shutouts. Markell led Region IX in NJCAA in saves, and save percentage. Markell was also second in the Region in goals allowed average. For the entire nation, Markell was 20th in the NJCAA for shutouts, 17th for minutes played, 43rd in goals allowed average, 32nd in saves, 28th in save percentage and 18th in wins.
The spring 2019 scrimmages were good for Markell as she played in all 5 scrimmages. She played a total of 6 halves in the spring and did not allow a goal. She had 15 saves and recorded 3.5 shutouts during the spring.
Markell is a good student who is on track to earn her Associate's Degree from Western in May of 2020. Markell was part of the Dean's Honor Roll for both the fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters.
During her sophomore year we expect Markell to continue her stellar play in the goal for the Mustangs and become a leader for the Western Wyo team. Markell plans to continue her playing career after her time at Western.
