On Saturday at the Metro State Campus in downtown Denver CO the Mustangs played against #17 LCCC Golden Eagles for the third time in the 2018 season.  LCCC had gotten the best of the Mustangs the previous two matches of the year.  This was the first time that WWCC had made it to the Region IX finals in their twelve year program existence.

The match was a battle.  LCCC came out guns a blazing in the first half and had the WWCC team on the ropes a few times in the first 45 minutes of the match.  However, Markell Freeman and the tough Mustang back-line withstood all challenges from the Golden Eagles and the halftime score was WWCC 0 and LCCC 0.

In the second half the Mustangs were able to get forward more and find more of the ball in possession.  As each minute passed on the scoreless scoreboard the Mustangs grew in confidence.  All the grit and determination paid off in the 89th minute.  Abbie Riley was fouled around 30 yards from goal after bringing up the ball on the right side of the field.  MaKayla Barnes crossed in a beautiful left footed bending ball to the front post.  Jaden Auger beat the defender who was marking her and flicked the ball past the LCCC keeper into the back of the net.  The lone goal of the match came with just 47 seconds left to play.  The Mustangs were able to kill off the remaining seconds on the clock and earned the Region IX Championship with the 1 to 0 victory.  This is WWCC Women's soccer first Region IX Championship and the win improves their record to 13 - 6 - 1, the most wins in a season in program history.

Mustang Valuable Player:  Jaden Auger - For a very solid match but most importantly the match winning header.
