On Saturday at the Rock Springs High School Tiger Turf the Lady Rattlers of Otero Junior College came to town to play against the surging Western Wyoming Mustangs. The last time these two teams played each other it resulted in a 3 to 3 draw in Colorado.
The Mustangs may have been overmatched on paper against the Lady Rattlers, who are currently in 2nd place in Region IX, but they played very well, with toughness and grit. WWCC scored first when Madisyn Cantrell score an unassisted goal in the 15th minute. The WWCC lead would stick for the rest of the 1st half and the score at the break was 1 to 0 in favor of the Mustangs.
Otero controlled most of the match but struggled to break through the Mustang defense. The Lady Rattlers scored in the 66th minute to tie the match. The tie score would remain for the rest of regulation. The score after 90 minutes of play was 1 to 1.
The Mustangs and Lady Rattlers were set to play two overtime periods. Right before the end of the first overtime period the OJC team scored off of a corner kick after several attempts were blocked and thwarted right before the goal. The final score was OJC 2 and WWCC 1 in Overtime. The loss makes the WWCC record to 6 - 9 - 1 and 4 - 5 - 1 in Region IX play.
Sophomores Rylee Blacker, Maya Perrin, Maddie Case, MKenzie Safford, Aly Sweet and Shantay Robinson started and played in their last match in Rock Springs unless the Mustangs can earn the right host a first round playoff match.
Mustang Valuable Players: Rylee Blacker and the Mustang Back Line (Maddie Case, MKenzie Safford, Vanesa Ramirez, Jessica Arevalo). This defensive unit kept WWCC in the match against a relentless OJC offensive attack.
