Mustangs Advance to Semifinals

On Saturday in Sterling CO the Mustangs played a road playoff match against the Lady Plainsmen of Northeastern Junior College.  This was the 3rd match-up of the year for the two teams with WWCC winning both of the previous matches.

With a strong wind in their face the Mustangs still mounted a strong attack at the NJC goal.  Sadly no goals would come for the Mustangs in the first 45 minutes of the match.  Lindsey Lemmons and the WWCC defense had to come up with a couple of good saves and stops to a very motivated NJC team.  The score at halftime was zero to zero.

In the second half the Mustangs would find the only break through they needed in the 55th minute when Yridian Cardenas stole a pass from the NJC defense and struck a beautiful shot from about 20 yards out to beat the keeper.  The Cardenas goal was the only offense the Mustangs needed as the halftime adjustments from the WWCC defense along with the wind kept the NJC attack from getting close to the Western Wyo goal.  After 90 minutes of play the score was WWCC 1 and NJC 0.  The road playoff win brings the 2017 record to 12 - 7 - 1.  This is the Mustang's second year in a row to win a road playoff match and play in Denver CO in the Region IX semifinals.

Mustang Valuable Player:  Yridian Cardenas for the heads up steal and goal.
